The nutritional and skin care supplement market has really kicked off over recent decades and with new research many have been proven to aid health, well-being and targeted concerns.  However, not all supplements are created equally and so it’s important to have some knowledge about them in order to buy smart and get the desired results.

With that in mind, instead of instructing you on whether you should or shouldn’t take supplements, we’ll simply discuss the reasons and benefits for taking them from a beauty and well-being perspective and provide knowledge regarding quality and efficacy.

Why would I take supplements?

Supplements are typically Vitamins, minerals, oils, herbs, cultures and extracts that provide added nutrition, which we may not be getting from our diet, in order to assist the body’s natural processes and function. They have been seen to aid our immunity, gut function, skin function, collagen strength and production, energy levels, joints, pain management and much more.

If you have a good, healthy, balanced diet then you may well get a good dose of Vitamins, oils and minerals from your food, but some are harder to obtain and regardless, many of us do not have a consistent healthy eating regime.  Besides this, we must consider how much nutritional value the foods we consume actually have, sadly we have no way of truly knowing. For example, many Vitamins come from our fruits and vegetables but due to mass farming, the time it takes to get the items to our supermarkets after picking, the time they then spend in our fridges or homes before consumption and also any cooking process they may go though, we know that the quality and nutritional value of these items is almost definitely reduced.

Supplements are taken in order to offer the body nutrients in abundance, in the hope of ensuring our body runs smoothly and remains healthy.  From a beauty or cosmetic perspective our skin, hair and nails are the last to be fed nutritionally, all other organs and systems pull rank, so in order for us to achieve healthy skin, it is highly advised to add supplementation to your skincare investment in order to feed the skin from within.

Skin care supplements have been proven to aid problematic skin conditions such as acne, dry skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, pigmentation, reduce oil, add hydration, smooth complexion and reduce redness and inflammation. All in all, normalising cell and skin function and restoring a youthful complexion and glow.

What supplements should I be taking?

This is something you need to either decide for yourself, be advised by us here at SIRENS Skin and Beauty (Crawley Down) following a consultation, be advised by a similar well-being practitioner or by advisement of a medical professional.

In general, unless you have a particular condition, it’s always good to start on a good multi-Vitamin to ensure all the basics are covered when it comes to health and well-being. Onwards from that is prescriptive, dependant on what each person is looking to achieve. It’s also important to consider that Vitamins and nutrients work in synergy with each other to perform tasks correctly, so getting advice is truly worthwhile.

A few examples of the most popular supplements to take would be; Vitamin C, for its anti-oxidant capabilities and immunity support. Pro-Biotics for restoring and maintaining healthy gut function. Vitamin A to ensure correct cell function and renewal. Omegas for hydration, anti-inflammatory action and supporting brain, eye and heart health.

How do I know the quality of the supplements I am purchasing?

Unfortunately, there is a lot of very poor-quality supplements on the market that don’t necessarily offer what is marked on their label. This is due to cheap bulking agents being used, storage of the items and degradation in production and shelf life.

It’s important to research the brand you are purchasing from if you really want to see results, essentially it does come down to the old cliché of “You Get What You Pay For”. This doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune, but I think we all know that Vitamins from the Pound Shop for example, are not going to be much cop.
