Acne is a problematic skin condition that affects more than 80% of people at some point in their life. The main symptoms are spots on the face, chest, and back which can vary from mild to acute in severity.  The reasons behind its occurrence vary wildly but hormone changes through puberty, family history, and dietary issues are some of the known catalysts.

When treating acne, a holistic approach is needed and consistency is key. So, first and foremost we would look at getting the active acne under control.  This can be achieved using a prescriptive skincare regime from one of our skincare specialists at SIRENS Skin & Beauty (Crawley Down, Sussex), or in more severe cases clients would be advised to visit their GP for a dermatology referral.

“Once we have the acne under control, the next step for many is to deal with the unfortunate residual damage that acne can cause, such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and scarring.”

Acne Scarring

Acne scars are formed due to the damage acne creates on the skin, much like scars from wounds and cuts we experience throughout life. They can become hyper-pigmented or even cause pigment loss. We can also see harsh textural changes, pitting, raised bumps, and ice pick scars. This is due to the fibrous tissue wound healing can create within the skin, where collagen has been laid down quickly but incorrectly and stiffly.

All aspects of acne scarring can occur for many different reasons such as picking & squeezing, burst cysts, poor wound care, repetitive issues in one area, the individual wound healing abilities, and environmental factors, including the sun. In order to treat these issues, we must find a way to regenerate and rejuvenate the skin, and this is where Dermapen (micro-needling) comes in.

Dermapen Treatment

Dermapen is a micro-needling device that taps into the skin’s natural ability to heal and rejuvenate. The small, hand-held device delivers up to 1,300 micro punctures into the skin per second. These micro-traumas stimulate the skin’s wound healing response, prompting the break down of these negative fibrous tissues and laying down new, healthy collagen and elastin whilst also normalising various skin functions including melanin (pigment) production.

The treatment will be performed at different depths depending on the area and issue being treated. The micro-needles are so fine that the treatment is usually relatively pain-free and comfortable without the need for numbing creams or agents. Although, in some more extreme scarring cases numbing may be advised.

Treatments can be tweaked and advanced using chemical peels and DP Dermaceuticals “non-negotiable” Meso-Infusion serums. These are the only products specifically developed for use when performing Dermapen micro-needling treatments.  The highly active meso-glide combinations have been scientifically proven to advance results when treating an array of different skin conditions and concerns and are endorsed by practitioners across the globe. Options for advanced treatment options would be discussed and recommended at consultation.

Typically, treatments for scarring are performed 6-8 weeks apart and a course of 4-6 treatments is recommended for optimum results. However, results are subjective and further treatment may be needed to reach your goals. Results should start to become apparent around 6 weeks post-treatment with visible glow, improved texture, and gains made in overall skin function.

Throughout the treatment course, it is imperative that a prescriptive and active skincare regime (including nutritional supplementation ideally) is maintained at home. This helps the skin stay in a fit and healthy condition so that it has the best possible chance at healing and re-modeling itself. Daily sun care application is a non-negotiable when investing in a treatment such as this, not only to protect the skin from further damage but to protect the new collagen growth and formation.

A full skincare and treatment consultation is mandatory prior to any treatment booking. These are charged at £30 with £20 being fully redeemable against products bought or treatments booked. Course discounts are also available.
